INDIVIDUAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS OF THE MACRO-IMAGE OF THE FUTURE OF UKRAINIANS IN CONDITIONS OF WAR

Abstract

The article presents the results of an online study (January – March 2024) of individual and psychological factors of macro-image (image of the world) of the future among domestic citizens in the conditions of war. The sample consisted of 572 respondents aged 18–83 (on average, 35.6 y.o.; the vast majority were women). The following methods were used: "Subjective well-being scale" by E. Diener (SWLS), the scale of patriotism from the questionnaire "Civic identity" by I. Petrovska, the scale of openness to the future by C. Botella, etc. (OFS), the TIPI-UKR questionnaire by O. Klemanska and I. Haletska, and the author's questionnaire with scaling elements for studying of macro-image of the future in Ukrainians consciousness. The assessments of the future concerned respondents’ locality, Ukraine as a whole, and the global context. The study revealed that the components of the macro-image of the future were most strongly associated with personal factors, including openness to the future, subjective well-being, and patriotism. At the same time, their relationship with the “Big Five” personality traits was considerably weaker. The most statistically significant associations were observed between all personal factors and the degree of respondents’ engagement in various activities aimed at shaping the future of Ukraine. A substantial number of correlations—primarily with subjective well-being, patriotism, and openness to the future—were also identified concerning expectations about the likelihood of different military, political, and socio-economic achievements. By contrast, the weakest statistical correlations concerned the perceived difficulty of predicting the future, which was linked to friendliness, conscientiousness, subjective well-being, and openness to the future. Among the substantive components of the future image, only the frequency of using creativity and self-development as strategies for influencing Ukraine’s future was associated with all personality factors.
